  • Faithful to my Homeland, the Republic of Poland

  • POLITICAL COOPERATION

  • Poland established  diplomatic relations with Iraq at the level of diplomatic missions in 1932. After the overthrow of the monarchy in Iraq, the diplomatic relations between the two countries were raised to the level of embassies. The Embassy of the Republic of Poland in Baghdad was evacuated to Jordan in 2003 for the period of the war and resumed operations in June 2003. On 23 October 2004 Ambassador of the Republic of Poland Ryszard Krystosik submitted his letters of credence to President G.Al-Jawar.

Ambassador of Iraq Walid Shiltagh began fulfilling his mission in Warsaw  on 23 September 2004.

Contacts at the government level were established at the beginning of 2004 and since then have retained high dynamics. Warsaw was visited by Minister of Culture Mufid M. Al-Dlaziri (19-20.02.2004), Minister of Trade Ali Alawi ( 25.02.2004), the delegation of the National Council for Antiques and National Heritage headed by  General Conservator A. Salih( 23-26 May 2004), Iraqi Minister of Foreign Affairs H.Zebari ( 18-20 May 2004), Deputy Defense Minister Z.Cattan ( 28 October 2004), Mayor of Baghdad  A. Tamini ( 23-24 November 2004). Interim President of Iraq G.Al-Jawar paid an official visit to Poland on 13-14 September 2004.

In 2005 the Polish side gave a tone to the mutual relations. In July 2005 a government delegation headed by Prime Minister Marek Belka and with the participation of the ministers of foreign affairs, national defense and culture visited Baghdad and Iraqi Kurdistan. Then the main elements of the recovery plan for mutual relations and cooperation were agreed and a memorandum of cooperation for the implementation of international agreements in the area of safety and non-proliferation was initiated.  In November 2005 the then Minister of National Defense Radosław Sikorski went to Baghdad. In December 2005 Prime Minister Kazimierz Marcinkiewicz paid an official visit. During that it was decided , among others, to stimulate the work of the Government Commission , establish a branch commission for cooperation in the area of oil and gas, enter into talks over the regulation of Iraqi debt to Poland, which amounts to over 786 million USD.
