  • PASSPORT DOCUMENT

  • According to the Act every Polish citizen has the right to be issued with a passport. Deprivation or limitation of the right may only happen in the cases provided for in the Act.

The consulate is the passport organ for Polish citizens abroad. The consulate issues two types of passport documents: passports and provisional passports.

The passport document enables you to cross the border and stay abroad and it also confirms Polish citizenship as well as the identity of the person indicated in it within the scope of data the document contains.

The rules of issuing passport documents were formulated in the Passport Document Act of 13th July 2006( the uniform text, the Journal of Laws of 2013, item 268). According to article 43 sec. 1 of the above-mentioned act, passports and provisional passports in the Republic of Poland are issued and denied by the provincial governor’s office which received an application for issuing a passport document , and abroad- by the consulate.

The passport issued to an under-thirteen-year-old person is valid for five years from the date of issue and issued to an over-thirteen-year-old person- 10 years from the date of issue.

The passport contains a microprocessor in which the holder’s biometric data is placed ( biometric data: the image of the face and the fingerprints inserted in passport documents in the electronic form).

    The provisional passport is issued:

    • to persons staying abroad while they are waiting for the receipt of a passport made in the Republic of Poland ( if the applicant expresses such a wish and applies for the issue of the document)
    • to persons staying temporarily in the Republic of Poland and abroad in order to return to their permanent address
    • to persons staying in the Republic of Poland and abroad in substantiated emergencies connected to an illness or the funeral of a member of the family
    • to persons staying in the Republic of Poland and abroad in substantiated emergencies connected to their professional activities

The provisional passport is valid for the period of time indicated in it, however, no longer than 12 months from the date of issue. Biometric data is not inserted in provisional passports.
