  • Faithful to my Homeland, the Republic of Poland

  • PESEL NUMBER

  • A PESEL number is placed in passport documents.

The consul applies for granting a PESEL number to Polish citizens living abroad  applying for issuing a passport document; no fee is charged for this act.

To achieve this the interested person submits an abbreviated or unabridged copy of the Polish birth certificate and accordingly an abbreviated or unabridged copy of the Polish marriage certificate.

There is no possibility of granting a PESEL number on the grounds of a foreign birth certificate.

In particularly justified cases the consul is allowed:

    • To issue a provisional passport without placing a PESEL number in the document( a provincial governor does not have a possibility to issue a provisional passport without a PESEL number)
    • To accept copies of foreign marriage certificates in order to issue a provisional passport ( a passport organ in Poland does not have such a possibility).

The possibility of issuing a provisional passport without a PESEL number by the consul in case of newborn babies abroad is a convenience for their parents  in the situations when holding a baby’s identity document is urgently required or recommended.

However, it is recommended that the parents immediately take action to have a baby’s foreign birth certificate entered in the Polish civil status registers, which will  make it possible to obtain a copy  of the baby’s Polish birth certificate indispensable for the consul to apply for granting  a PESEL number(for issuing a passport).

Attention! There is no possibility of issuing a ( biometric) passport without a PESEL number.
